Welcome to my Blog

May 21, 2009

You know, it wasn’t very long ago that I didn’t even know what a blog was.  Now it seems I have to have one.   Doesn’t everyone?  Of course, I was the last one on the block to get a cell phone as well but now I never leave home without it.  At  62, it seems a bit harder for me to keep up with the latest in technologies and all the goodies that go with it, but I am trying.  So bare with me and if you like join in with your comments.  I am open to suggestions.

I am thinking how great it is  going to be to run my own web site for a change.  It has become much too difficult relying on my web master for all my new post.   I am sure he is somewhat relieved about the new situation as well.   So thank you Gilbert for all the work you have done for me.  I do appreciate it.

I have studied the ancient Chinese martial art of San Soo since 1968 making me one of the oldest teachers around.  I have many stories not only of the great Jimmy H. Woo, but also of the infamous Frank Woolsey.  I will be sharing those stories and my experience and knowledge of this art with all of you that are interested.  See you next time.

  1. Hi Master Bill- YES! MORE STORIES PLEASE! I was actually prowling around the internet looking for some real-life San Soo stories when I found your new site- very nice. I’m training but haven’t ever used San Soo as I pretty much stay away from situations which might force me to fight. It really helps us to hear real-life accounts of how this stuff actually works!

Keep the faith- and I really enjoy learning via your distance learning products.

  2. Hello Master Bill!
I’m an older man, yet a relatively new student of San Soo (Recently earning my Green Belt). I just discovered your web site, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your stories about Jimmy Woo! I prize and very much appreciate your personal experiences with and knowledge of Jimmy Woo. I think he must have been a man of great compassion, wisdom and sense of humor. Only such a man could use the Art of San Soo as it was certainly meant to be used – by those of gentle spirit and valiant heart – and only when unavoidable, defend life and limb and family with great martial art’s skill and fury.

  3. To Scott Mohr—–this ’stuff’ works just the way Bill Hulsey says it does.
Jimmy always said “Don’t fight till ya have to, but then,,,win.”
If you are learning from Bill, just do as he says do, cause he learned from Jimmy, as I did…..
    Keep at it…..

  7. The last time I heard about Steve and dave, Woolsey had just closed the Downey school…

  9. I’d enjoy hearing any comments about San Soo, or questions…..
My e-mail is working quite well….
It’s all lower case letters,,,,I don’t use capital letters, it is too confusing to some people…
So, if ya got anything to say—–
    jmkfss@yahoo.com

If not,,,that’s okay too—-I’ll read everybody elses

  10. Somebody mentioned that us ‘old timers’ called our stuff ‘AhSoo, Fut-ga, Toy-Li-Ho, Nampi’
We called it that cause that was what Jimmy called it, when he taught it to Frank Woolsey…
And when I met Jimmy the first time in 1968, right after I got my green belt from Frank, Jimmy asked me who my instructor was…I said ‘Frank Woolsey’, Jimmy said “Franky is good boy, he teach you real good”
Three years later when I got back from ‘Nam and out of the Marine Corps, things had changed, and I was not yet aware of it, till Frank said he was better than Jimmy, cause Jimmy was an old man….That comment came from Frank in 1973..that’s when he said it to Me.
I don’t know if Frank ever said it to Hulsey,,,,,we never really talked much about it…
We just knew that Frank was getting cocky and I, personally, didn’t like to hear Frank talking about Jimmy like that.
I was surprised when Frank closed all five of his schools in one weekend.
All the instructors went to Jimmy except a couple of em that didn’t care to continue.
Jimmy accepted us all with open arms and much respect, cause he KNEW that we all had total respect for HIM and the ART.
THAT was when I started understanding about the Ahsoo, Fut-ga, Toy-Li-Ho, and Nampi
Bill is teaching it cause it came from Jimmy, and I teach it for the same reason—-it came from Jimmy and it WORKS if it is APPLIED properly.
Jimmy said about a few things—–ya don’t have to like it all, but that don’t mean it isn’t part of the Art.
Jimmy asked me to bring my lesson books to him—-I did it the next day.
Jimmy pointed to three different lessons and said “Show me that one”. I guess he couldn’t read my writing.
He called a student over and said “show me those lessons on him.”
When I showed him my lessons from Frank Woolsey, Jimmy said “that good, you teach those in your school along with what I teach you”. All I could do was smile real big and say YES SIR!!!!!
I was SO PLEASED that Jimmy approved of how I did them…
All Jimmy said after that, when I was on the mat in his school, was, he would walk up to me and say “you do real good, just go slower”. Later, in a couple months, I asked Jimmy about practicing so slow…He said “practice to hit target perfect, the speed will come naturally”
Everybody can say anything they want to about anything I’ve said about Jimmy or Bill, or what they have said to me…
All I know is that I was there when it was said and Jimmy said it to ME, personally….
You can take what I say, or what Bill says,,,anyway you want to….I suggest you take it as truth, cause I or Bill have no reason to lie—–AND—we can back it,,,,,
I’d rather help teach than have to prove myself,,,,and hurt somebody…
    Bill is a great instructor—–GET HIS MATERIAL….

  11. Mr. Smohrman, I checked my e-mail. It is up and running fine, so if you wish to comment on anything I’ve said, feel free to write to me…

  12. Mr. Smohrman, my e-mail is
    jmkfss@yahoo.com

  13. I found out two days ago that Yahoo is going out of business in a couple months. So,,,I changed my e-mail address to —–jmkfss@gmail.com….
So,,,if ya wanna ask anything, you can email me…..
But I’ve said before—-get Bill Hulsey’s material….It came from the Grand Master, Jimmy H. Woo.
It just took Bill and myself a whole lot of years to get the stuff….
If ya don’t understand anything else, remember this,,,as Bill said it in a past newsletter—–a black belt is only a white belt who didn’t quit…..
I’ve been a Master of SanSoo since 1990.
    AND—I’m still studying the Art….
    AND—-Bill is also still studying.
You can’t learn over 4000 years of information in one lifetime,,,that is why we help each other and practice together.
No matter what level of training you are, from lst day of training to black belt—-just take it one day at a time.

    Any questions??????
    I’ll help if I can….jmkfss@gmail.com

  14. If anyone has any questions, I’ll be happy to try to answer—–my new e-mail is jmkfss@gmail.com
A couple people said my other email was not working, so use my gmail —–
I worked with Bill for a while in the Downey studio, as his assistant….I was there when he tested for brown belt—–Ted Sias tested him—-that’s how far back he and I go….
Jimmy taught a lot of things to Frank that some people today,,,don’t seem to understand—-Bill and I were there, as was Ron Bradburn, and Al Rubin…..Yeah, Al Rubin not only started with Frank Woolsey, he Taught in one of Frank’s schools—–ask Bill about THAT….
Ted Sias was a teacher for Frank….I wonder if Bill remembers Mike Turner…..If a person has been there, he can answer to it…..
