HULSEY TO RECALL MASTERS DEGREES
January 5, 2010If you received your master’s degree or any black belt degrees from Bill Hulsey from 1985 to present day and want to find out if your degree has been recalled, then do read on.
I am not going to mention any names here. I am already far to embarrassed for you guys to further humiliate you with the mention of your names. You know who you are. Everyone at my school knows who you are. If you fit into the category or have ever done any of the following then I am talking about you. I just wish there was a way I could give you your money back in exchange for the wisdom I have given you. Unfortunately there isn’t, so instead I am recalling your master’s degree.
I have been president of the infamous “black sheep squadron” ever since I left Frank Woolsey’s to begin my training with the late grandmaster Jimmy H. Woo, back in 1975. My students and I have listened to crap from green belts to studio owners ever since. Maybe you guys don’t like the fact that I came from Franks Woolsey’s first before beginning my training with Jimmy. Actually, I can almost understand bad mouthing coming from those of you in business but you Judas masters I don’t train any more, you need to keep your mouths shut. How soon you forget.
If you let it be known that you left my school so your new teacher could take you to the next level, then what you are really saying is that you never reached the level of master in the first place. Real masters have all ready reached what you call the next level. A real master is one who no longer needs the aid of an instructor. So, if this shoe fits your foot, then take off the master’s degree I gave you and get recertified from your new instructor. You can also rip up the certificate I gave you, because for you and me it no longer has any meaning.
There are also those who came to me with the sob story of not being able to afford the training offered at my school. When I made arrangements to allow them to study for free, what did they do? They went out and actually paid another instructor full price while continuing to study with me as well. I gave you first class training that could save your life for over 12 years and you put a con on me like that. What a disappointment you are.
Later on, you had the audacity to come back into my school for another free workout. You actually tried to convince some of my loyal students to quit my school and go to another school. That is the most despicable thing any of my students has ever had done to me in my 35 years of teaching. Is there anything more disrespectful than that? Do you hate me so much, that you try to take food off my families table, or take away my daughter’s college tuition? What were you thinking? I ask you, would you like me to go down to your work and try to convince you boss to reduce your salary by a few hundred dollars? I don’t think so. You think I am pissed off at you, you damn right I am. By your actions, you have disgraced yourself and dishonored me and my family. I am recalling your master’s degree because you simply don’t deserve my signature on your certificate. Go get recertified and trash the belt and certificate I gave you because in my eyes trash is exactly what they are.
I am so glad to know you are now learning how to determine who could win in a real fight without ever having seen either opponent actually fight. I guess I missed that class. I really don’t care about your opinion or that you told one of my loyal masters that your new teacher could rip me apart! That doesn’t hurt my feelings one bit. Maybe he could, I don’t know, but then again, neither do you. All I can do is my best. That is all any of us can do. I do know this though and it is guaranteed, that if anyone is unlucky enough to run into one of my flush punches, they would need a plastic surgeon to put their face back together. All the masters I have trained have this ability. If you don’t feel this about yourself, then don’t wear the belt I gave you and go get recertified
I think that what you don’t understand is that when you say bad things about me, you are also talking about yourself as well. If you learned anything at all from me, you should not be talking trash. I have told you over and over to never under estimate your opponent. You must treat all adversaries as your potential equal. All masters know that this is a fundamental lesson in our art. If you don’t believe this, then go get recertified. You are not one of my masters.
You cannot ever change the san soo DNA you have. It came from me. I got it from Frank Woolsey and then Jimmy Woo and in that order. Sorry about that! I do have a question for you though and do give this some real thought before you answer. If someone came up to you and tried to break your jaw, what would you do? Would you use the san soo you learned from me or the lessons you are learning now? If your answer is the lessons you are learning now, that is ok because your new teacher is a master with great wisdom and abilities, but take off the master’s belt I gave you and get recertified from him.
Know this. I don’t care if one of my students leaves my school and seeks out another teacher. It happens to all teachers regardless of how good they are. I left my first teacher to study with Jimmy Woo. Just leave with dignity. There are a handful of those who chose to leave without honor and without dignity. For you guys, I do apologize. I have failed you. I failed to teach you the most important part of the art. I do believe I taught each and every one of you how to defend yourself in the absolute worst of situations but I failed you in the building of your human character and integrity. What do we really have in this world? We have our character and that is what history will judge each and every one of us on. For those few of you who are ungrateful for what I have given you, I have but one last lesson to give to you and this one is also free. Your degrees have been recalled. GO GET RECERTIFIED.
I agree 100% Bill.
Master Hulsey,
I am saddened to read what your students have done to you. I use to attend your classes back when you were on Alondra haha yeah that long!! I wish I can one day attend your classes again, I also want to bring my children along, they seem to really like it. Hope one day I can attend your classes again. Just glad you are still teaching. I will swing by to have my children sit down and watch your class. Although I only got up to like lesson #8 on white belt I still remember some moves.
God Bless
i feel sorry for those guys…:(
WOW.. very powerful message. I have trained in this art off and on since 1981, daily for the past six years. I am shocked that anyone could even question the ability of Master Bill Hulsey in the art of Kung Fu San Soo. I do not know if I have ever met this other master that is spoken of in this storey, but I think out of respect this Master should apologize for his student (Master Bills ex student). Master Bill is a first Gen Master who earned and received his Master from the late Grand Master Jimmy H Woo. Master Bills knowledge alone is gold. That goes for all first Gen Masters still alive or that are still teaching. These Masters are all we have as KFSS practitioners to keep this art straight as Losifu gave it to us. Formal Salute to you Master Bill. Sean E. -Inland Valley Kung Fu San Soo-
You are not alone, Bill. But I was lucky, I only had one student that I trained to Master,,,,do it to me….
And what Hurt, was that he went to another Master that was over 60 miles away…….and I knew who it was,,,,and the other Master wasn’t that good——I had seen his students….
So, don’t feel too bad, Bill….
Jimmy probably had some of his own that did it to him…
There are bad in every endeaver……nothing we can do about it,,,,,just keep doing what we were taught to do….
Teach each student the very best we can, just like we learned from Frank, and later, Jimmy
Frank was a good instructor, or we wouldn’t be who WE are,,,,,Jimmy was just good and forgiving enough to give his best to US,,,,and I am still grateful for that….
Without Frank, we wouldn’t have gotten the Ah-Soo etc
so it wasn’t all that bad……I still tell people about Frank
and what he could have had……
SOOOOO ole buddy,,,,,by the way, how come we are lookin’ so old……
Jimmy always said “be the best you can be” and don’t worry about the rest……
YOU were the one who told me—–YEARS ago,,,,I’m gonna do what I want with San Soo (videos) cause I BOUGHT this from Jimmy,,,,,and anybody don’t like it,,,
they know where my school is—-they can come see me about it….
Well,,,,Bill,,,,ya think the people that have insulted you AND the Art,,,,,that when they see you on the street, they probably change direction real quick,,,cause they have to watch it……they don’t want to face you after this…so THEY are worried about YOU……Soooooo, keep on keepin’ on and just enjoy teaching the WORTHWHILE students that are still doin’ it right!!!!
Ya think??????? ole buddy…..
You and I met when I was a green belt at Franks,,,and I later became your assistant…….our attitudes have not changed——-we still love the Art and keep it pure…..
Later, old man,,,,,keep up the good work!!!!!!
Hey Jerry:
You must be speaking for yourself on the “why do WE look so old part.” the rest is so true. I have trained about 27 masters and only a couple of those have betrayed me like that. Add in a couple more black belts and there you have it.
I am not really that concerned about it. i just wanted them to know that i know what they did. I am tired of keeping silent. Like you said, I’m an old man now and I really don’t give a xxxx.
I would feel the same way if I put my heart and soul into a student and they stabbed me in the back. You are an awesome instructor, and don’t let someone get you down. We go way back to Frank, and I appreciate all you have done for me and your students.
Keep on keeping on you are doing great. Contuine with San Soo you do it justice!
Let me start out by qualifying myself to those who will read this. I have trained with Master Bill Hulsey since 1992 and received my master’s degree in January 2004. I have first hand knowledge of the situations that Master Bill describes in his article.
One of the masters I do know personally and have spoken with him on the phone. I called him myself to let him know what was happening. He then went to Bills blog after our conversation to read for himself. No comment was left by him. That seems to be the M.O. of these guys. They have nothing to say for themselves. These guys are pond scum to say the least.
My issue is not really with them though. My issue is with the cowardice master that they train with. My son and I went to this so called school of the next level ran by xxxx xxxx located in xxxxxxx, xx. This idiot (Xxxx Xxxx) actually told us that Master Bill never trained at Jimmy’s. I have personally seen pictures of Jimmy and Bill holding up the master’s degree that Jimmy had just awarded him. I have also seen the master’s degree signed by Jimmy himself.
HE also said that the reason Bill lost some students to him, 15 years ago, was because Master Bill could not explain the techniques they had brought back from their new school, so they had to seek a higher education elsewhere. Funny, Bill never seemed to have any trouble explaining these same lessons to me.
He also explained how the old timers as he put it, went to Jimmy after leaving Frank Woolsey’s and cried to jimmy to promote them. I’ll mention a few names that he could recall; Master Ron xxx xxxxxxx, Master Al xxxxxx, and Master Ted xxxx. I have complete respect for these masters and do not mention their names lightly but duty calls to let them know what’s being said about them. Masters like Xxxx Xxxx, Xxx Xxxxxx and Xxx Xxxxxxxx create and feed an environment for this bull shit.
Master Xxx Xxxxxx calls my master talking about san soo brotherhood, give me a break. What brotherhood do you speak of Xxxxxs, the one that sat my Master at the back of the room at Jimmy’s retirement party, instead of with the other studio owners, where he rightfully should have been? What a way to honor Jimmy. You guys are all PUNKS every one of you, PUNKS.
Bill has too much class to tell you what he really thinks in a forum like this. Maybe that why I’m here. You all dishonor the memory of Jimmy H. Woo and disgrace thr art of san soo. YOU GOT SOMETHIN TO SAY! SAY IT
YOU COWARDS. But remember there’s some one here to call you on it. Like Master Xxxx Xxxxxxx of old: You talk crap and I’ll take the first flight to your asses!!!!!
Those of you that know me will attest to my skill and level of the mastery of this art. I can actually fight. I don’t sit in a school and talk trash and hide behind “oh I have the most mat time of any one who ever trained with jimmy.” All the while, here’s a guy that can’t even tie a belt around his own waist. Some real discipline there. Thanks for the lesson Xxxx. Reap it you cowards reap it!
I love you Bill, thanks for always setting me straight. I hope they learn their lesson some day. First ones free PUNKS!!!!!!!!!!

Lowell is right, ya know…..
I remember at Frank’s when Ted Sias tested you for —-
I forget now, was it your brown belt, or your black one…
He made a couple corrections on your technique and I thought your were gonna SHOW him how it worked,,,,,Your Way….
Yeah, your right, I’m the one that is gettin’ old….
By the way,,,,,those fools KNOW that you know….
Jimmy KNEW who was betraying HIM too…..
I told Jimmy one time,,,that Frank had made the statement—–you will remember this—-Frank said “I can beat Jimmy cause he is old and I am young”.
I asked Jimmy about that and Jimmy said “Frank told everybody that, but ME…..
Jimmy said “Frank used to be one of my best students, I don’t know what happened, but it is his loss.
Sooooo, Bill old boy, do like the rest of us, and I know you already are…..just keep doing what Jimmy always said—-keep up the Art and keep teaching the best you can…..
There are still those of us who teach the pure Art….and that is all we can do….
I still teach the way Jimmy said to do it, and I know that YOU are TOO…..
I’ve had students want to learn all kinds of crap—-ya know????? Grappling and some other junk…..I just said,,,,,surprise me on a dark street some time,,,with all that crap….and I will SHOW you what works best…
THIS is NOT a sport…..and I can prove it….
Those students are just a very few, so we ain’t gonna worry about em, are we….
Lowell has been jumped by people who watched his class——-when he turned em loose, their only comment was—-this sxxx really WORKS!!!!
SOOOOO, we do what we’ve always done—–just keep at it.
Thanks for everything I’VE learned from you…..
jmkfss@gmail.com
Hey Bill, what’s with this ‘captcha code’,,,,you KNOW that some of us have to THINK a minute before we can send you a note…..I’m not used to thinking, just re-acting…..
Is this sumpin that the computer system says ya gotta do??????? Or is this one of Your brain children just to see if we can read…..??????
You KNOW I can show ya any Ah-Soo, Fut-Ga, etc almost instantly, but tryin’ ta figger out ledders and numbers is almost tooo much for this old Redneck.
Enjoyin’ yer webbsight, old man…..
Tryin’ ta talk redneck ain’t easy……huh???????
Rather test fer a yellow belt again…..except ,,,,now that I thunk about it,,,,we didn’t have to test back then….
I got my yellow belt when I finished lesson 13 Ah-Soo…
That was when Frank was sayin’ how GREAT Jimmy was,,,,before he got that Big Head of his…..
Sorry to take ya that far back in history—–wasn’t that when Wyatt Earp was still town Marshall in Dodge City??????
God, I’m old……
I got my GREEN belt in 1968,,,,,just before I went into the Marine Corps……God, THAT has been forEVER.
Later, Man…..
By the way, Bill
You still teaching the Ah-Soo ‘verbatum’? as we got it from Frank??????,,,,,in Parts???? like we got it?????
I still do, plus the variations……
Also, I’ve told my students in the past, as well as now——there are no ‘basics’ in San Soo’,,,,it is all nasty—–but ya gotta start SOMEwhere…..ie……number one Ah-Soo is a deadly bitch……but there are several variations of it,,,,that are just as deadly as the original technique…..
When I started, Frank was only open Mon, Wed, and Fri , so 13 Ah-S00 lessons took 3 months to get to…
which is why it was lesson 13 when I got yellow belt…
But I can’t remember what lesson I was on when I got my Green belt——
I remember that when I got back from the Marine Corps, I started again in January of 1972 and Frank told me to test for my Brown when I was on 5 Fut-Ga, which was in May of ‘72,,,,,,Chuck Curtin was told to test me for Brown,,,,cause I wanted to teach and Frank needed an instructor——I was assigned to teach that very day,,,,and Steve Howell told me that I was allowed to teach the first ten Ah-Soo,,,,only,,,,,until I could prove I knew how to teach…
Shortly thereafter, I became your assistant at the Downey studio….
BOY,,,,did I take you far enough back in history?????
By the way,,,is Ron Bradburn still guitarin’ in the clubs???
More history later,,,,,unless you don’t want to be reminded anymore,,,how old we are…..
AND,,,,you told a fib a while back….you talked about retireing!!!!
I don’t think you will retire till, like me, yer dead,,,,THAT is when you’ll be done….
as long as yer still alive, San Soo will keep ya goin’
so you will retire when ya can no longer move….
Keep it up,,,ole man
Your friend,,,,,Jerry
Master Hulsey,
Many times during 30 years of teaching what I learned from Frank’s instructors and from Jimmy, the way I learned it, I have fielded criticisms for teaching the ‘old’ way. So be it.
You are correct, anyone who criticizes their own lineage is criticizing themselves.
No need for you to feel discouraged, this kind of thing always goes on in the martial arts as time passes. You are doing what Jimmy told all us to do, “Teach it the best you know how”.
Thank you for your integrity and your lifetime of work helping to preserve the ancient and original style.
Rick

Dear Master Hulsey,
Thank you for posting your article on “Recall”. In every story and every situation there is always more than one side. It’s like a marriage when two people devote so much time together and so much has been given on both parties it takes a seed of bitterness from either party or an action to unravel something that could have been so great. As I read your article, I can’t help but to think that I might be on that list that you have dealt; but for reasons not of guilt but for clarity, I’m responding.
You are an honorable man to have allowed me to clean the studio week after week to earn my lessons and for that I am in debt to you. I spent hours studying, hanging on every word that you said, knowing every story that you told me; I have earned my confidence in San Soo Kung Fu.
In the past three years since I left the Bellflower studio, I have come across fellow brothers in the art who have asked me why I left your studio. My response has always been the same. There was simply no more advanced students to work out with, in fact there was hardly any students coming in when I left. I can’t control how that might be interpreted and pasted on in conversation. I think back at the time when there was hardly any room to move on the floor and one had to be careful not to fall over the student next to him. I left the Bellflower studio to continue my journey because of a deep passion I have and hunger to continue studying and training in the art of San Soo. I will always consider myself a master under your great teaching but a student for life.
I would like to close by saying; if I have ever offended you Master Hulsey in any way then I am deeply sorry and hope you can find forgiveness towards me.
Sincerely,
MC
Master Bill,
I am terrible sorry to hear this. I hope this does not bring you down. I am thankful that someone still teaches the original more effective San Soo that was taught prior to the lawsuit Jimmy had.
I have some questions, is Frank Woosley still alive? Does he still teach? When did he stop teaching San Soo?
Aloha Master Bill. Not sure if you remember me. I was a good friend of your student who passed away many years ago, his name was Joel Ward. Joel loved San Soo and your teachings. You made a positive impact on his life. I have never forgotten it. Try not to think about the bad that has happened to you. Just keep training and teaching. It’s not about who’s right or who’s wrong. But who’s left. And you’ve stood the test of time. Keep punching! Aloha. David Tavares.
Master Bill Hulsey has always been gracious and a complete gentleman when speaking with me on the telephone. Master Hulsey has not once, never, ever talked bad about another soul involved in Kung-Fu San Soo… even though several others certainly deserve it. Master Bill Hulsey has never lowered himself to the level of his critics and nay-sayers. Master Hulsey just keeps on teaching Kung-Fu San Soo in the “Old San Soo” curriculum. Thereby, ensuring to perserve that early part of Kung-Fu San Soo history for the future generations. I salute you, Master Bill!
Master Bill,
Unfortunately class and integrity is something you can’t teach, as someone who was taught by you and experienced what you have to offer, I can only say it’s to bad you had to subjected to the classless few.
