Master Bill,
Thank you for the lessons you taught my Sifu (Gary Owen). Those lessons and the original brutal, effective forces behind them stand true to the next generation. I remember a time when my class included only my siblings & Sifu Tony. Although small, we learned an immense amount. With those small classes I was tasked with teaching my younger siblings, as well as freestyling with my Sifu. Some would say that held me back. I would say that those small, intense 4-5 hour workouts were the best education I could have recieved. The “next level” was achieved through personal dedication to becoming the best I could be. That cannot be taught. Only encouraged. I believe you have encouraged your students to be their best, and to defend themselves. The rest was up to them.
Now, I live in NY, far from any San Soo studio – and I would love to have the honor of cleaning up on the weekends just to have the chance to practice/learn again.

Peasant Soldier…actually my comment about Cage time with a trained fighter really isn’t off base. It was directed only to those few who wrongly feel that Master Hulsey is not qualified to take them to the “Next Level.” It was not aimed at the San Soo community at large.
It is rather sad when these few leave Master Bill for another “Master” who himself, has a low opion of Bill thinking they will reach the “Next Level.”
These Masters bank on what they learned 20 years ago not realizing that the technique of fighting has radically changed over the past 15 years. They still feel that their catch a punch, then application of a cool leverage or throw will still work…if it ever would to begin with. Well, one place to prove it is in the Cage. Catching a punch, thows and leverages are well within the rules of any Cage Combat event.
The bottom line is this, disrespecting Master Bill by training with a Master who has a low opinion of Bill is not the level I would like to reach.

I think your suggestion that the “ultimate proving ground” is “cage combat” and that “Mat time with anyone doesn’t equal Cage time against a pro MMA fighter” is off base. Most people and I do believe most people won’t be at UFC 150, however they will be in situations where self-defense and hand-to-hand combat skills will be critical to survival. Kung fu san soo fills the need of common people who may street encounters or need a system for combat.

The next level?????? Step into the Cage. Everyone knows that Cage Combat is the ultimate proving ground. There are MMA fighters out there who are just itching to take someone to the next level.
Want something a little more real? Come with me to the ‘hood. There are White Belts in Smith and Wesson and Glock 9mm who will take you to the next level for free.
Mat time with anyone doesn’t equal Cage time against a pro MMA fighter.
Cool leverages and throws…..try that in the Cage and see how long you last on your feet.

Want to try the next level…Just piss Master Bill off…Understand Master Bill is for real. Just look into his eyes and you see that he won’t play.

That was a nice letter by Mike. However, he did make it very clear that he left because he was looking for the next level whatever that means. If anything, the next level is mental. That can’t be found in any school. The mental level is developed through personal experience etc.. It is to bad Mike didn’t take advantage of the small amount of students at Bill’s to work with Master Bill one on one. What greater honor is there than to spend time with Master Bill one on one?

Master Bill is by far the best of the best. My life is so much better for the time I spent with Master Bill. I travel to a lot of dangerous places around that world and the stuff Master Bill taught me has kept me alive. I will be forever greatful to Master Bill.

Mike….the next level…..try jiu jistu.. everyone knows that the highest level starts on the ground.

Frank Woolsey is still alive and doing well the last i heard. He stopped teaching around 1975 and continued with his other career which is in construction.

Unfortunately class and integrity is something you can’t teach, as someone who was taught by you and experienced what you have to offer, I can only say it’s to bad you had to subjected to the classless few.

Master Bill Hulsey has always been gracious and a complete gentleman when speaking with me on the telephone. Master Hulsey has not once, never, ever talked bad about another soul involved in Kung-Fu San Soo… even though several others certainly deserve it. Master Bill Hulsey has never lowered himself to the level of his critics and nay-sayers. Master Hulsey just keeps on teaching Kung-Fu San Soo in the “Old San Soo” curriculum. Thereby, ensuring to perserve that early part of Kung-Fu San Soo history for the future generations. I salute you, Master Bill!

Aloha Master Bill. Not sure if you remember me. I was a good friend of your student who passed away many years ago, his name was Joel Ward. Joel loved San Soo and your teachings. You made a positive impact on his life. I have never forgotten it. Try not to think about the bad that has happened to you. Just keep training and teaching. It’s not about who’s right or who’s wrong.
