Without Fear by Bruce Nettles

Jimmy Woo spoke about living without fear. I believe that Jimmy was speaking of the feeling you can obtain through your confidence with Kung Fu that you didn’t worry about being confronted by some aggressive foe. There is nothing he can try to do to you that you can’t counter and prevail over the situation. There really is no other greater gift to possess than to have no fear.

When you reach a point in your training and life experience that you can say that you live without fear it doesn’t mean that you are so overconfident and cocky that you feel you can go out and face an adversary with a loaded gun and not worry about getting hit by flying bullets, although I did in fact do that a couple of times (man, I can be an idiot at times). It means that you can walk anywhere at any time and feel good in your knowledge that you can deal with any situation that may come up. This doesn’t mean you look for every chance to prove yourself and jump into the middle of a skirmish that has nothing to do with you (see earlier comment about being an idiot).

It means that one of the greatest reasons you decided to study Kung Fu has been reached. We all have feared violence against us at some time. This is a prime motivator in learning self defense. All other reasons such as exercise are secondary. Now there is a weight that has been lifted from our shoulders. We stand a little taller and look forward and not down. A feeling of self worth enters us. There really is no other greater gift to possess than to have no fear. Woo was right again.
